You know a Christmas song that starts off "Rudy lives on the borderline, between civilization and basic survival" is not going to turn out to be one of the world's jolliest tunes. Nonetheless, the Be Good Tanyas' "Rudy" is one of my favorites.
I know that more than a few struggle through this time of year, some missing loved ones who are gone and others feeling the echo of loneliness in this season of togetherness. Unfortunately many either don't realize, don't care, or don't remember how difficult this time is for some.
This song (and this slideshow in particular) focuses on the homeless. Talk about opposite sides of the coin: a season that all too often is about stuff--buying stuff to wrap in stuff to give to people to add to their piles of stuff--about excess, about materialism versus life without a roof, without a meal, without friends, family, or loved ones.
So my message to you, my plea really, is to remember that not everyone is feeling jolly in December. Whatever their reasons--be it depression, loss, loneliness, or one of a billion other things--remember that not everyone enjoys Christmas. Many simply tolerate it while others grit their teeth and soldier through it while still others find it to be a good time to say goodbye.
Remember this the next time you're tempted to call someone a "Scrooge" or "The Grinch" for not getting into the "holiday spirit." Your overtures will be much more appreciated if you keep in mind that the spirit of the season is not actually about piles of presents, jingle bells, jolly old elves, or lawn decorations. Extend genuine friendship and wishes of joy rather than digs and dings about lack of Christmas bling.
So watch the slideshow, listen to the song, and remember what this holiday is really supposed to be about. And remember, too, how lucky you are to have all that you have... and I don't mean your flatscreen tv or your collection of iPods.
